The History Of Valentines Day

Who knew? Valentine’s Day has been around for centuries. I bet some of you thought it was a holiday created by the greeting card company, but alas it is not.

Valentine’s Day does not have to be a holiday for “lovers.” Even those who are not currently in love, or who have given it up for good can celebrate. Those who celebrate their love for someone do not have to only concentrate on their one and only. February is the perfect month to show love, kindness, friendship, and service for others. Random acts of kinds are especially appropriate this month.

Some great ideas are:

Write a thank you note to someone

-A previous teacher

-Someone who did something kind for you

-Someone who has made a difference in your life

-A parent, grandparent, child, grandchild, etc.

-Just to tell someone you appreciate them

Leave quarters at the laundry mat

Pay for the car behind you in the a fast food line

Buy a meal for a veteran, active duty, or first responder

Put up sticky notes at work or school or a random place with positive messages on them

Compliment someone

-For good service at a store

-Let someone’s supervisor know they’re a good employee

-Tell someone what a good mom they are or how well behaved their child is

-Let someone know you admire their talent

Send a letter of encouragement

Send a care package to a soldier, missionary, or student

Mail a handwritten card or letter to someone

Check in with someone you haven’t talked to in a while

Make a phone call to a friend or family member

Visit a shut-in, elderly person, or someone who is ill

Reminisce with a friend

Leave generous tip

Come up with your own act of kindness

There are so many opportunities around us to be kind, and help or serve others. Carpe Diem, Seize the Day…don’t miss an opportunity to be kind! While you’re at it, don’t limit your kindness to February, keep it going through the year.
